Moody's raises its outlook for sub-Saharan African sovereigns to positive

Moody's changed its outlook for sub-Saharan Africa to positive, citing reforms, strong commodity prices and better access to financing. It expects average growth of 4.3% in 2026 and 2027, with government debt falling from 62.4% of GDP in 2025 to 56.6% in 2027. Eight of the 25 rated countries carry positive outlooks.

Why it matters

A firmer sovereign credit picture can lower borrowing costs for governments and the companies priced off them, though Moody's still flags heavy debt service in Kenya and Zambia.
