United States and Zambia sign a five-year, $2.49 billion health cooperation MoU
The United States intends to provide more than $1.5 billion over five years, subject to working with Congress, and Zambia pledges to raise domestic health spending by $975 million. Priorities include HIV, tuberculosis, malaria and maternal health. Procurement of medical commodities will shift gradually to Zambia, and US-supported health workers will move into the civil service.
Why it matters
Moving procurement and staffing onto Zambia's own budget changes who buys medicines and supplies, which matters for suppliers and local manufacturers.
