Botswana reported to be near agreement to raise its De Beers stake to about 25%
Botswana and the Global Diamond Consortium, led by former De Beers chief executive Gareth Penny and including Namibia and Angola, are near agreement on their future stakes in De Beers, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Botswana would likely raise its holding from 15% to around 25%. Anglo American is seeking to exit De Beers, and no agreement has been finalised.
Why it matters
The outcome will shape who controls De Beers, which is central to Botswana's economy through the Debswana joint venture.
