Competition Tribunal approves Shoprite and Woolworths acquisitions with conditions
South Africa's Competition Tribunal conditionally approved Shoprite Checkers' acquisition of the PicardiRebel liquor stores and Woolworths' acquisition of In2food Holdings. Shoprite must spend capital refurbishing the stores and observe a two-year moratorium on merger-related retrenchments. The Woolworths conditions cover employment, procurement and the handling of competitively sensitive information. Deal values were not disclosed.
Why it matters
Public interest conditions on employment and procurement remain a standard cost of doing larger deals in South Africa.
