ECOWAS ministers adopt battery storage rules as Ghana procures 200 MW of batteries
Meeting in Accra on 22 October, ECOWAS energy ministers adopted a regional directive on battery energy storage covering licensing, market participation and battery safety and recycling. Ghana's Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor said the country is procuring a 200 MW grid-scale battery system paired with a 200 MWp solar plant, and that payments to independent power producers have risen from about 40% of monthly bills to nearly 100%.
Why it matters
A common regional framework and better payment discipline in Ghana both bear on the bankability of power and storage projects in West Africa.
