Tanzania says $1.39 billion is available for 424 km of its standard gauge railway
Transport Minister Makame Mbarawa announced on 24 October that funding of US$1.39 billion is available for the Makutupora-Tabora and Tabora-Isaka sections, part of the line connecting Dar es Salaam with Mwanza on Lake Victoria. Completion is targeted for 2028. The lender was not named in the report, and the minister raised concerns about contractor delays.
Why it matters
Funding for the central sections keeps Tanzania's rail link to the Lake Victoria region moving, which matters for regional freight and logistics investors.
