Tanzania and Angola agree to link their ocean ports by rail
During Angolan President João Lourenço's state visit, the two countries signed a bilateral deal to develop a railway linking Lobito on the Atlantic with Dar es Salaam on the Indian Ocean, through the DRC and Zambia. It would join the Benguela Railway with the TAZARA network. No financing, construction date or route for the missing section has been disclosed.
Why it matters
A coast-to-coast rail link would give mineral and agricultural exporters in Central and Southern Africa a choice of ports, though the project is at planning stage.
