British International Investment puts £2.25 billion towards Africa's frontier markets
British International Investment, the UK's development finance institution, is directing £2.25 billion to Africa's less-served markets, a quarter of the £9 billion it plans for Africa under its 2026 to 2031 strategy. BII plans to invest £5 billion directly and mobilise £4 billion from partners, with a focus on power, ports, railways and digital infrastructure. Chief executive Leslie Maasdorp named markets such as Burundi and the DRC, where commercial capital is scarce.
Why it matters
Development finance aimed at markets most investors avoid can make projects there bankable for others.
