Guinea opens its first gold refinery, the Nimba Gold Refinery in Conakry
Guinea inaugurated its first gold refinery, the Nimba Gold Refinery in Conakry, on 1 November, with capacity of up to 733 tons a year. New rules require miners to refine locally, and the central bank may buy up to 30% of industrial and semi-industrial operators' gold output for the state. Mines Minister Bouna Sylla said the immediate aim is to refine 30% of the country's production.
Why it matters
Gold refining moves into the country, changing how miners in Guinea sell their output and opening work in assaying, logistics and finance.
