Ghana gets a $66 million discount on Cenpower arrears in an amended power purchase agreement

Ghana's government has obtained a $66 million discount on about $400 million in overdue payments owed to Cenpower Generation Limited, under an amended and restated power purchase agreement. In return the government granted a 10-year extension of the agreement, and Cenpower will charge a lower tariff. The deal was signed at a ceremony marking 10 years of operations at Cenpower's 375-megawatt Kpone Thermal Power Plant.

Why it matters

Clearing debts owed to independent power producers is central to the health of Ghana's power sector and to investor confidence in new generation.
