GIADEC and RUSAL sign a deal for a bauxite mine and alumina refinery at Nyinahin

The Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) and RUSAL signed an agreement at the Russia-Africa Forum in Moscow for a bauxite mine and a 1.2 million tonnes a year alumina refinery at Nyinahin in the Ashanti Region, costing more than $1.5 billion. Construction is expected to take about 36 months, with about 5 million tonnes of bauxite mined a year. RUSAL will finance the project and hold majority stakes in two joint ventures, Nyinahini Bauxite Ltd and Ghana Alumina Company.

Why it matters

It would be a large step towards processing Ghana's bauxite in the country rather than exporting the raw ore.
