Tanzania and Kenya sign a five-year potato pact to close their seed deficit

The Potato Council of Tanzania and Kenya's National Potato Council signed a five-year memorandum of understanding at the 13th World Potato Congress in Naivasha, Kenya. It covers technology exchange, standards, trade and market access, and joint research. Kenya produces about 24,000 tonnes of certified seed against demand of 150,000 tonnes, and certified seed meets about 2% of Tanzania's demand.

Why it matters

Better seed supply is the quickest way to raise yields for a crop worth KSh72.5 billion a year in Kenya alone.
