Ethiopia rebases its GDP and becomes Africa's fifth-largest economy

Ethiopia has moved the base year of its national accounts from 2015-16 to 2024-25, which puts the size of the economy 59% above the earlier figure, according to Finance Minister Fitsum Assefa. Services make up about 36% of output, agriculture 32% and industry 30%. Growth is projected at 10.2% this fiscal year.

Why it matters

Debt ratios will fall on paper, but Oxford Economics notes that debt, servicing costs and foreign-currency needs are unchanged.
