Tanzania seeks private partners for two 1,000 km standard gauge freight corridors

Tanzania Railways Corporation is looking for private partners, under a form of public-private partnership, to build and operate two freight corridors of about 1,000 km each. The southern line would run from Mtwara to Mbamba Bay on Lake Malawi, with branches to the Mchuchuma coalfield and Ludewa iron ore; the northern line from Tanga to Arusha and Musoma on Lake Victoria. TRC also listed state-funded orders including 34 electric locomotives and 1,000 freight wagons.

Why it matters

The southern line would open up coal and iron ore deposits that have waited decades for transport.
