The IEA raises its renewables growth forecast for sub-Saharan Africa by 54%
In its Renewables 2026 report, published on 6 November, the International Energy Agency raised its forecast for renewable capacity growth in sub-Saharan Africa by 54%, with solar PV making up more than 80% of new capacity from 2026 to 2031. South Africa and Nigeria account for almost half of the region's new renewable capacity, and solar's share of generation is expected to rise from around 3% today to 11% by 2031.
Why it matters
Most of the upgrade comes from distributed solar, so the growth is in rooftops and mini-grids as much as in large plants.
